Image Processing Based Air Vehicles Classification for UAV Sense and Avoid Systems

The maturity reached in the development of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) systems is making them more and more attractive for a vast number of civil missions. Clearly, the introduction of UAVs in the civil airspace requiring practical and effective regulation is one of the most critical issues being currently discussed. As several civil air authorities report in their regulations “Sense and Avoid” or “Detect and Avoid” capabilities are critical to the successful integration of UAV into the civil airspace. One possible approach to achieve this capability, specifically for operations beyond the Line-of-Sight, would be to equip air vehicles with a vision-based system using cameras to monitor the surrounding air space and to classify other air vehicles flying in close proximity. This paper presents an image-based application for the supervised classification of air vehicles.

Estimation of the Engine Thermal State by in-Cylinder Pressure Measurement in Automotive Diesel Engines

International regulations continuously restrict the standards for the exhaust emissions from automotive engines. In order to comply with these requirements, innovative control and diagnosis systems are needed. In this scenario the application of methodologies based on the in-cylinder pressure measurement finds widespread applications. Indeed, almost all engine thermodynamic variables useful for either control or diagnosis can be derived from the in-cylinder pressure. Apart for improving the control accuracy, the availability of the in-cylinder pressure signal might also allow reducing the number of existing sensors on-board, thus lowering the equipment costs and the engine wiring complexity. The paper focuses on the detection of the engine thermal state, which is fundamental to achieve suitable control of engine combustion and after-treatment devices.

Analysis of the Effects of Injection Pressure Variation in Gasoline Partially Premixed Combustion

Compression-ignited engines are still considered the most efficient and reliable technology for automotive applications. However, current and future emission regulations, which severely limit the production of NOx, particulate matter and CO2, hinder the use of diesel-like fuels. As a matter of fact, the spontaneous ignition of directly-injected Diesel leads to a combustion process that is heterogeneous by nature, therefore characterized by the simultaneous production of particulate matter and NOx. In this scenario, several innovative combustion techniques have been investigated over the past years, the goal being to benefit from the high thermal efficiency of compression-ignited engines, which results primarily from high Compression Ratio and lean and unthrottled operation, while simultaneously mitigating the amount of pollutant emissions.

Currently engine designers are focusing their attention on the improvement of the engine efficiency, led by the reduction of in-cylinder temperature and the adoption of stoichiometric combustion in the full range of the engine operation map. The most demanding points are those close to full power: water injection is thought to help in fulfilling this goal, thus contributing towards more efficient engines. To perform a rapid optimization of the main parameters involved by the water injection process, it is necessary to have reliable CFD methodologies capable of capturing the most important phenomena. In the present work, a methodological approach based on the CFD simulation of non-reacting flows of S.I. GDI turbocharged engines under water injection operation is pursued using AVL Fire code v. 2020.

The Use of Piezoelectric Washers for Feedback Combustion Control

The use of piezoelectric cylinder pressure sensors is very popular during engine testing, but cylinder pressure information is becoming mandatory also in several on-board applications, where Low Temperature Combustion (LTC) approaches require a feedback control of combustion, due to poor combustion stability and the risk of knock or misfire. Several manufacturers showed the capability to develop solutions for cylinder pressure sensing in on-board automotive and aeronautical applications, and some of them have been patented. The most straight-forward approach seems the application of a piezo-electric washer as a replacement of the original part equipping the spark plug; the injector could also be used to transfer the cylinder pressure information to the piezoelectric quartz, in diesel or Gasoline Direct Injections (GDI) engines.

Advanced Combustion Modelling of High BMEP Engines under Water Injection Conditions with Chemical Correlations Generated with Detailed Kinetics and Machine Learning Algorithms

Water injection is becoming a technology of increasing interest for SI engines development to comply with current and prospective regulations. To perform a rapid optimization of the main parameters involved by the water injection process, it is necessary to have reliable CFD methodologies capable of capturing the most important phenomena. In the present work, a methodology for the CFD simulation of combustion cycles of SI GDI turbocharged engines under water injection operation is proposed. The ECFM-3Z model adopted for combustion and knock simulations takes advantages by the adoption of correlations for the laminar flame speed, flame thickness and ignition delay times prediction obtained by a detailed chemistry calculation. The latter uses machine learning algorithms to reduce the time to generate the full database while still maintaining an even distribution along the variables of interest.

Performance Assessment of a Model-Based Combustion Control System to Decrease the Brake Specific Fuel Consumption

The challenge of industrial carbon footprint reduction is led by the engine manufacturers that are developing new technologies and fuels to lower CO2 emissions. Although the deployment of relevant investments for the development of battery electric vehicles, diesel, and gasoline cars are still widely used, especially for their longer operating range, faster refueling, and lower cost. For this reason, more efficient traditional internal combustion engines can guide the transition towards new propulsion systems. In this document, the innovative piston damage and exhaust gas temperature models previously developed by the authors are reversed and coupled to manage the combustion process, increasing the overall energy conversion efficiency. The instantaneous piston erosion and the exhaust gas temperature at the turbine inlet are evaluated according to the models’ estimation which manages both the spark advance, and the target lambda.

Application of a One-Dimensional Dilution and Evaporation Lubricant Oil Model to Predict Oil Evaporation under Different Engine Operative Conditions Considering a Large Hydrogen-Fuelled Engine

The increasing environmental concern is leading to the need for innovation in the field of internal combustion engines, in order to reduce the carbon footprint. In this context, hydrogen is a possible mid-term solution to be used both in conventional-like internal combustion engines and in fuel cells (for hybridization purposes), thus, hydrogen combustion characteristics must be considered. In particular, the flame of a hydrogen combustion is less subjected to the quenching effect caused by the engine walls in the combustion chamber. Thus, the significant heating up of the thin lubricant layer upon the cylinder liner may lead to its evaporation, possibly and negatively affecting the combustion process, soot production. The authors propose an analysis which aims to address the behavior of different typical engine oils, (SAE0W30, SAE5W30, SAE5W40) under engine thermo-physical conditions considering a large hydrogen-fuelled engine.

Experimental-Numerical Analysis of Gasoline Spray-Wall Impingement at Ultra-High Injection Pressure for GCI Application

Nowadays, in the perspective of a full electric automotive scenario, internal combustion engines can still play a central role in the fulfilment of different needs if the efficiency will be improved, and the tailpipe emission will be further limited. Gasoline Compression Ignition engines can offer a favourable balance between NOx, particulate, operating range. Stable operations are ensured by ultra-high gasoline injection pressure and tailored injection patterns in order to design the most proper local fuel distribution. In this context, engine simulations by means of CFD codes can provide insights on the design of the injection parameters, and emphasis must be placed on the capture of spray-wall impingement behaviour under those non-conventional conditions. This paper aims to analyse the spray-wall impingement behaviour of ultra-high gasoline spray using a combined experimental-CFD approach.

The need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from motor vehicles pushes the European Union towards drastic choices on future mobility. Despite this, the engines of the “future” have not yet been defined: the choice of engine type will undoubtedly depend on the type of application (journey length, availability of recharging/refueling facilities), practical availability of alternative fuels, and electricity to recharge the batteries. The electrification of vehicles (passenger and transportation cars) may be unsuitable for several aspects: the gravimetric energy density could be too low if the vehicle has to be lightweight, must achieve a high degree of autonomy, or needs a very short refueling time.

Today, the contribution of the transportation sector on greenhouse gases is evident. The fast consumption of fossil fuels and its impact on the environment have given a strong impetus to the development of vehicles with better fuel economy. Hybrid electric vehicles fit into this context with different targets, starting from the reduction of emissions and fuel consumption, but also for performance and comfort enhancement. Lamborghini has recently invested in the development of a hybrid super sport car, due to performance and comfort reasons. Aventador series gearbox is an Independent Shift Rod gearbox with a single clutch and during gear shifts, as all the single clutch gearbox do, it generates a torque gap. To avoid the additional weight of a Dual Clutch Transmission, a 48V Electric Motor has been connected to the wheels, in a P3 configuration, to fill the torque gap, and to habilitate regenerative braking and electric boost functions.

Geometric and Fluid-Dynamic Characterization of Actual Open Cell Foam Samples by a Novel Imaging Analysis Based Algorithm

Metallic open-cell foams have proven to be valuable for many engineering applications. Their success is mainly related to mechanical strength, low density, high specific surface, good thermal exchange, low flow resistance and sound absorption properties. The present work aims to investigate three principal aspects of real foams: the geometrical characterization, the flow regime characterization, the effects of the pore size and the porosity on the pressure drop. The first aspect is very important, since the geometrical properties depend on other parameters, such as porosity, cell/pore size and specific surface. A statistical evaluation of the cell size of a foam sample is necessary to define both its geometrical characteristics and the flow pattern at a given input velocity. To this purpose, a procedure which statistically computes the number of cells and pores with a given size has been implemented in order to obtain the diameter distribution.

The Effect of the Throttle Valve Rotational Direction on the Tumble Motion at Different Partial Load Conditions

In PFI and GDI engines the tumble motion is the most important charge motion for enhancing the in-cylinder turbulence level at ignition time close to the spark plug position. In the open literature different studies were reported on the tumble motion, experimental and not. In the present paper the research activity on the tumble generation at partial load and very partial load conditions was presented. The added value of the analysis was the study of the effect of the throttle valve rotational direction on the tumble motion and the final level of turbulence at the ignition time close to the spark plug location. The focus was to determine if the throttle rotational direction was crucial for the tumble ratio and the turbulence level. The analyzed engine was a PFI 4-valves motorcycle engine. The engine geometry was formed by the intake duct and the cylinder. The CFD code was FIRE AVL code 2013.1.

A Data-driven Approach for Enhanced On-Board Fault Diagnosis to Support Euro 7 Standard Implementation

The European Commission is going to publish the new Euro7 standard shortly, with the target of reducing the impact on pollutant emissions due to transportation systems. Besides forcing internal combustion engines to operate cleaner in a wider range of operating conditions, the incoming regulation will point out the role of On-Board Monitoring (OBM) as a key enabler to ensure limited emissions over the whole vehicle lifetime, necessarily taking into account the natural aging of involved systems and possible electronic/mechanical faults and malfunctions. In this scenario, this work aims to study the potential of data-driven approaches in detecting emission-relevant engine faults, supporting standard On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) in pinpointing faulty components, which is part of the main challenges introduced by Euro7 OBM requirements.

Development of an Automatic Pipeline for Data Analysis and Pre-Processing for Data Driven-Based Engine Emission Modeling in a Real Industrial Application

During the development of an Internal Combustion Engine-based powertrain, traditional procedures for control strategies calibration and validation produce huge amount of data, that can be used to develop innovative data-driven applications, such as emission virtual sensing. One of the main criticalities is related to the data quality, that cannot be easily assessed for such a big amount of data. This work focuses on an emission modeling activity, using an enhanced Light Gradient Boosting Regressor and a dedicated data pre-processing pipeline to improve data quality. First thing, a software tool is developed to access a database containing data coming from emissions tests. The tool performs a data cleaning procedure to exclude corrupted data or invalid parts of the test. Moreover, it automatically tunes model hyperparameters, it chooses the best set of features, and it validates the procedure by comparing the estimation and the experimental measurement.
